- Step 2: Complete the check sheet with information from your transcripts.
- Step 3: Email the completed check sheet to your faculty advisor.
- Step 4: Use the information from your advisor to register your classes.
Instructions for students
This guide had been created to help students prepare the necessary documents for an advising session. Follow these steps carefully to ensure accuracy, which will help me recommend the best courses for your next term.
Remember, your transcripts are the final source of truth for completed courses and academic progress, not the check sheet or my recommendations based on the information you provide. If you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to contact me.
Note: Different advisors may prefer a different process; please connect with your assigned advisor to see what works best. If you are not certain of your assigned advisor, or wish to change advisors, contact the department secretary.
Step 1: Getting your documents
Download the check sheet for your major.
Save the file with your ID and last name as the filename. Example:
8675309 - jenny.txt
Access your transcripts via the student portal. This transcript is a list of the courses you have taken, the semester they were taken, and the grade you received. (If you are unable to access your transcripts, please contact the student business center to request a copy. Be certain to use your school email and include your student ID number.)
Step 2: Completing the check sheet
Open the check sheet in a text editor (Examples: Textedit on Mac or Notepad on Windows).
Place an
X
in the brackets for courses you have completed or have in progress.Reference information from your transcripts for accuracy.
Replace XX00 with the semester and year of a course completed or in progress. Examples:
FA24
= Fall 2024
SP24
= Spring 2024
SM24
= Summer 2024
TC
= Transfer Credit.Add any relevant notes. (e.g., grades less than C-, potential course substitutions).
After marking all courses, save the TXT file with your ID and name as the filename.
Step 3: Contacting your advisor
Email your academic advisor using your school email address.
Include in the email:
- The completed TXT check sheet from the steps above
- Your student ID number
- Your name
- Information that might be unique or relevant for your courses
- Subject line: “Registration Advising - ID number” (e.g.,
Registration Advising - 8675309
)
Step 4: Registration
Once you receive the returned check sheet and recommended courses, log into the student portal to complete the registration process.

It is possible to use wildcards in registration course searches to help find specifics:

Wrapping up
- Your advisor will use your completed check sheet to recommend courses for your next term. Please be as accurate as possible.
- Do expect some delay as advisors work through their advisee lists but if it has been more than a couple days, follow up.
- If you have questions, contact your advisor.
- If you register for classes other than advised, let your advisor know. Some classes are important to take in certain semesters and your advisor may have feedback for you.
